Li'l Melodies: A Specialty Playgroup for Children 18–36 mos and/or 3–5 yrs
Li'l Melodies Toddler (18–36 mos)
We will begin our music playgroup with hello songs to welcome everyone to our space and time together. The hello songs play in important role in that they are the the first notes that bring everyone to the present moment at the same time. Next we move into small movement and finger play songs that are often done acapella, so that movements can be demonstrated to the group. The finger play develops into larger gross motor movements: standing, jumping, and dancing! An energy release for kids, a small workout for adults...there’s something for everyone. After the sillies have been shaken out, we settle back down to a seated position for some singing, starting off with some well-known favorites with a sprinkling of new or original tunes. I always like to ask if there are any song requests from the kids, which promotes learning the names of songs and encourages speaking in a group. We end with a couple of rousing familiar tunes and finally a goodbye song. If time and number of people permit, while packing up, I often let children come and strum the guitar while I hold the chord. Repetition of songs is both comforting and necessary for little ones of this age, especially when learning something new, so expect to hear some of the same songs from week to week. With this age, folk or traditional songs are primarily used with only voice and acoustic guitar.
Li'l Melodies Preschool (3–5 yrs)
The structure of this playgroup is essentially the same as the younger age group: hello songs, finger movements, gross motor movements, singing, requests, and goodbye. The difference is in theme and song choice. With the older children, there is a prevailing theme with each week and the movements a bit more complicated. We may be singing about vegetables, fruits, and food while spelling out letters with our arms...YMCA-style. The next week we could be exploring the sea, both above and below, discovering all the treasure and mystery it holds. The focus for this age (besides having fun!) is preparation for preschool/kindergarten and reinforcing what has already been taught. Introduction of new songs is more frequent and you will hear less repetition from week to week. Traditional songs will still be heard, but there will be much more use of new and original songs...maybe we’ll write our own! Voice and acoustic guitar will be the primary medium for music, but expect a sprinkling of instruments and recordings along the way too.
